Getting to the bottom of the toughest qualifier of the season always depends on what standards are put in place. Is it the number of teams entered? How many bids available? Qualified teams in the field? They all play a role.
We broke down each of the 12 national qualifiers by number of teams entered, number of bids available, number of teams eventually qualified, and the percentage of the latter two against the number of teams in the field. For 17 Open, Northern Lights proved to have the field with the highest percentage of previously-qualified teams at 36. Northern Lights also had the highest percentage of teams eventually qualified for Open at 39.
