Andi Collins always was a setter. She would have been an adult last year – perhaps traveling the world, perhaps coaching volleyball, perhaps planning a wedding or expecting a child of her own — had invasive breast cancer not taken her life Sept. 4, 2003 at the tender age of 16. At 5-foot-10, Collins, who played for California’s Mater Dei High School and Orange County Volleyball Club, was a hard-working setter with soft hands, quick feet and a disarming smile that eased the worry of her teammates but belied the intensive competitiveness that lurked behind it.
