In last week's Court Report, we highlighted setters who ran a 6-2 offense, but we heard from one coach -- of a really good team -- who said, "What about setters who run a 4-2?"
Remember the 4-2 offense? It’s the not-so-strategic system that teams typically run in middle school or on the playground where the setter is always one of the front row players. A 4-2 is when a team has just four hitters and two setters; that’s one or two fewer attackers than when playing a 5-1 or 6-2, respectively.
You may find yourself shrugging your shoulders or rolling your eyes at this simple concept – so what? Well, you may be surprised that the new No. 1 team, Hamilton-Southeastern HS from Indiana, runs this type of 4-2 offense… apparently with great success in its 22-0 season. The combination of having physical and offensive setters, great defenders, and pushing a fast offense is what allows a 4-2 to work for the Royals.
