ORLANDO, Fla. – Team Pineapple 16 Black players found Day 2 of the AAU Girls Junior National Volleyball Championships to be especially sweet on Tuesday. A three-match win streak and a real shot at the Championship Division can do that to a squad.

One day after going 2-1 in the first round of pool play, Team Pineapple of Angola, Ind., powered to a 2-0 finish in the top pool on Day 2 to grab the No. 1 seed going into Wednesday’s third round of pool play of the 16 Open division at the Orange County Convention Center.

Team Pineapple beat Wildfire 16N Corey of Florida in three sets, and then swept MVA 16-1 of Idaho, 25-22, 25-21, in the final match of the second round. MVA 16-1 had stunned Adidas KIVA 16 Red of Louisville, the original No. 1 seed, on Day 1.

It has been an impressive run for Team Pineapple, which has not won a major title this season, but does have multiple high finishes.

“It’s a great effort,” said Team Pineapple coach Brian Harris. “(Monday), we struggled a little bit to get started. Some rough starts.

(Tuesday), it was kind of up and down,” Harris said. “We gained a couple points. We’re up, then down. But we found a way to always fight back to win.”

Team Pineapple came into the tournament as the No. 9 seed but then got pushed up into the top pool after going 2-1 on Day 1. Now, after going unbeaten on Day 2, they will face two other Indiana squads – Boiler Juniors 161E Gold (5-1) and Munciana In 16 Cardinals (3-2)– along with USA South 16 Premier Purple (3-2) of Naples, Fla., when third-round play starts Wednesday.

Tournament notes: Defending national 16 Open champ A5 16-Gabe continued its stellar play with two more wins on Tuesday. The Atlanta power is now 5-0 and seeded second in the four-day tournament. Gabe Aramian coaches A5. … Five Florida squads are making a strong push for the Championship division: OT 16 T JP of Tampa, Tribe 16 Elite Cardinal of Deerfield Beach, OT 16 O Roberto of Orlando, OT 16 J Will of Jacksonville, and NO NAME 16 Sarah of Tampa. All five won their pools on Tuesday. … Tribe 16 Elite Cardinal has been extremely impressive, thus far. The South Florida squad is 6-0 overall, 12-0 in sets. Tribe took down defending national runner-up Tri-State Elite 16 Blue of Cincinnati in two sets in the final match on Tuesday. Tri-State had won its first five matches before falling to the Tribe. … SPVB 16 Elite of Chicago, which consistently cranks out national champions across multiple age divisions, is 6-0 through the first two days, 12-1 in sets. … A pair of Michigan teams – MiElite 16 Mizuno of Pontiac, an extremely athletic squad that is very deep on the front row, and Legacy 16-1 Adidas of White Lake – also are 6-0 through two rounds.
